Short Definition: 
Measures the level of trust among group members where trust indicates confidence in others related to belief in their good intent, competence and capability, reliability, and perceived openness
Definition and Explanation (Long): 
This indicator measures the level of trust among group members. Trust is a multidimensional construct that includes: a) belief in good intent and concern of exchange partners, b) belief in their competence and capability, c) belief in their reliability, and d) belief in their perceived openness (Nahapiet & Ghoshal, 1998). Trust contributes to positive attitudes toward knowledge sharing and intention to share knowledge (Chow & Chan, 2008).
Data Requirements: 
Self-reported quantitative data using Likert scales to determine level of trust; self-reported qualitative data describing level of trust

Purpose: 
The purpose of this indicator is to gauge the level of trust among members in a community. Trust among members may facilitate cooperation and knowledge sharing (Nahapiet & Ghoshal, 1998; Nonaka, 1994). The role of trust in knowledge sharing needs further exploration.
Issues and Challenges: 
One study found that while trust influenced quality of knowledge shared, it did not impact the quantity of knowledge shared (Chiu et al., 2006). Further research is required to better understand the role of trust across community modalities (online, face-to-face, and/or combination of face-to-face and online).
